Undoubtedly there are two ideal areas for sailing, both for the calmness of the sea in these areas, as well as for the large number of catamarans, sailboats and luxury yachts in the areas.

The Papagayo area, as well as the beaches of El Coco, Playa Panama, Ocotal, Hermosa, Riu is perhaps the best area for sailing, as you can explore the beautiful Papagayo peninsula as well as the beautiful Culebra Bay.

Another ideal area is Flamingo, Potrero, Las Catalinas, Tamarindo, Playa Grande, Conchal and Langosta, since you can also sail in the calm waters north of Flamingo, a favorite spot where most of the ships are anchored.

Climate and weather conditions

Remember that in Guanacaste, there are two marked seasons, the dry season that goes from December 1st to the middle of May, and then the rainy season, which goes from the middle of May until the end of November.

Any season is good for sailing, with the condition that during the afternoons of the rainy season, it is possible to have some showers, which does not happen every day and also, the rain cells are usually small and of short duration.

Flamingo and Potrero are the preferred departure points for sailing and all charters in the area comprised between Tamarindo, Playa Grande, Conchal, Potrero, Flamingo and Las Catalinas. The main reason is that the waters in the area are calm and beautiful, with great snorkeling conditions. Also, boarding is much easier than it is in Tamarindo or other areas in the Santa County. In case clients need for transportation from any other area to the Flamingo Marina or Potrero, we can arrange that via a local partner transportation company, specializing in those services.

In most of the hotels we can pick you up directly at the hotel, as most of them are ocean front or have close access to the ocean. Private Tours

We offer 3 different schedules:

1- 4 hours tour in the morning, normally from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm.
2 - Private sunset tour, which goes from 1:30 or 2:00 until after sunset, around 6 PM.
3 - Full day tour, which goes from 10 or 11 am until after 6 pm.
The full day tour additionally includes a full lunch.

Our private tours consist of sailing to undeveloped areas, to some beautiful and quiet beach, and the focus on nature is very important. We will try to see sea turtles, dolphins, or many colorful creatures and fish during the snorkeling. With some luck, you might also catch some fish during the tour, which is not that rare to happen.

Playa Grande

Playa Grande is a stunning beach located in the Guanacaste province on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Known for its pristine white sands, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant wildlife, Playa Grande is a popular destination for tourists seeking both relaxation and adventure.

Las Baulas National Marine Park

Playa Grande is part of Las Baulas National Marine Park, a protected area that plays a crucial role in the conservation of the endangered leatherback sea turtles. PRIVATE MORNING TOUR

This tour departs at 830 am and returns 4 hours later. We normally travel along the coast north of Las Cataoinas and Santarena hotel, heading to beautiful pristine beaches such as Guacamaya, Guacamayita and Playa Anntita.

PRIVATE SUNSET TOUR

The sunset tour departs at 2 pm and returns after sunset at 6 pm. It is ideal for those who want to see the sunset from the catamaran.

FULL DAY TOUR

For sea lovers, and those who want to sail for 8 hours, we offer the full day tour, which departs at 10 am and returns at 6 pm, after the beautiful sunset.

In the case of Hotel Santarena, we normally depart from the Flamingo Marina, which offers the perfect conditions for boarding. Occasionally, Las Catalinas and Playa Danta, where the hotel is located, have a bit strong waves, which complicates the boarding a bit.

Fishing from our Catamaran while sailing

During our sailing catamaran tours, it is also possible to practice fishing, since we have fishing rods on the bow of the catamaran, as well as lures.

Additionally, our crew will gladly assist you while we sail, to hopefully catch some fish.

Some of the most common species that can be caught are Roosterfish, Tuna, Macarela, Jacks, Ojaran, Wahoo and Dorado or Mahi Mahi.

Tuna - The peak is between August and October.
Mahi-Mahi - The peak starts from late May until October.

At the sites where we anchor, clients can still do a little more spin fishing, to see if they are lucky enough to catch a fish.

How is the fishing in Guanacaste ?

Two domestic domestic lines take sport fishermen and fisherwomen to more distant locations as well and in less than thirty to forty-five minutes fishermen and fisherwomen are ready for action.

Costa Rica is a country with an enormous conservation spirit for the sustainable use of species. In the case of species such as billfishes that include the different species of marlins and sailfish, fishing is catch and release in the water and the experienced captains are highly trained so that the tourist can take a picture but with the fish in the water which facilitates its release without harming the animal.

Other species can be taken and in the case of certain lodges or lodges they will gladly prepare them for lunch or dinner.

It is important that national and foreign fishermen know that in Costa Rica all fishermen must carry their fishing license up to date whether they are going to fish from a boat. Fishing licenses or fishing meats can be acquired through the Internet by entering the web page of the Costa Rican Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture (INCOPESCA) www.incopesca.go.cr or in any Regional Office of this institution.

There are two sport fishing clubs in San José that organize tournaments and activities throughout the year, the Amateur Fishing Club and the National Fishing Club. There are other smaller ones in different parts of the country.
